Your Complete Guide
to UK ISAs

Every ISA type, the 2026/27 allowance, calculators, and side-by-side comparisons, all in one place.

Why ISAs matter

The ISA is arguably the most valuable financial product available to a UK resident. It lets you shelter up to £20,000 of savings or investments every tax year from income tax, dividend tax and capital gains tax, forever. Over a working lifetime, that protection is worth tens of thousands of pounds. This hub covers the four main ISA types, the current allowance rules, and links to every ISA-specific calculator and comparison on the site.

The four adult ISA types

Cash ISA

A tax-free savings account. Interest is not taxed. Typically pays 2-5% depending on the Bank of England base rate. Best for emergency funds and short-term goals. See our Cash ISA vs Stocks & Shares ISA comparison for when cash makes sense.

Stocks & Shares ISA

A tax-free investing account. Growth, dividends and capital gains are all tax-free. Historically 7-10% annualised for a diversified global index fund over long periods. Best for 5+ year goals. Project growth with our ISA Growth Calculator.

Lifetime ISA (LISA)

For ages 18-39. Contribute up to £4,000 per year and receive a 25% government bonus (up to £1,000). Withdraw for a first home (under £450,000) or after age 60. Early withdrawals incur a 25% penalty. Model outcomes with the Lifetime ISA Calculator.

Junior ISA (JISA)

For children under 18. Separate £9,000 annual allowance that does not count against the adult £20,000. Becomes an adult ISA at 18. One of the most powerful long-term compounding vehicles available. Model it with the Junior ISA Calculator.
